1. Choose your edition of Windows 7 Explore key features and choose the edition that's best for you. Be sure to check the expanded list of extended features in Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate. System requirements vary for each edition of Windows 7 because some features might require special hardware.
2. See if your PC has what it takes to run Windows 7 In general, if your PC can run Windows Vista it can run Windows 7. To make sure, download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to do a quick check. If you want certain features, such as HomeGroup or Windows Media Center, check to see if your PC has the hardware that's needed.
3. Check which operating system your PC is currently running How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system.
Windows Vista The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.
Windows XP (or any other operating system) Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider.

Barry R. Thornton Said: Windows 7 Upgrade ( Sep. 6th 2010 )
I installed the Windows 7 Upgrade a few days ago on both my desktop and laptop and have been pulling my hair out ever since. Screen lock-ups, hours of watching the little spinning circle, failure to come out of the sleep mode, incompatablity with certain game programs, the list goes on. I would definately NOT recommend this software to anyone (maybe the IRS).
I. Adler Said: Vista to Win 7 ( Sep. 6th 2010 )
This was one of the easiest upgrades I've done with windows products. It was a quick setup that was finished within an hour. I didn't have any driver issues and it kept a copy of my vista files on the C:/ drive so i could go back and keep whatever i wanted and delete the rest.
Windows 7 itself is so much better than vista both in speed and ease of use. I turn off the UAC because i get annoyed by it popping up, but it's good for the novice computer users who don't know what they are doing. It will prompt them when they are isntalling something that will affect their computer. The window snap functions are great for multitasking. You can snap two open windows to the left and right sides so you can look at one while working at the other with ease. Alt tabbing brings up a list of open windows for you to sift through and Win+tab brings up a revolving visual list that you can scroll through and click on what you'd like to access.
Gaming on this system works well, and seems to have better performance over vista. Backwards compatibility is good as well. I can't think of any issues i've had. Battery life on the laptop is still good, it seems to not abuse the hardware when doing simple tasks.
All in all very happy with the system and no complaints.
Michael W. Mcclure Said: you do need vista ( Sep. 5th 2010 )
Windows 7 is great and easy to install as lond as you are upgrading from vista. If up grading from XP ther are many step to do.If your not into dumping a system and doing backup for the program then make sure your running vista before buying this product. After loading this you'll wonder why they ever made vista in the first place.Windows 7 works like xp and vista mashed together.fast and much easier to operate.
anson Said: Works for me! ( Sep. 5th 2010 )
After I did a thorough job of taking care of all incompatible software identified by "Windows 7 Advisor", the installation went smoothly on my Acer (Vista) laptop. The process takes forever with many re-boots but otherwise no problems.
